adding a photo for Robert L. Brokenburr's page
[edit]I noted the request for a photo for Brokenburr's page. As one of his grandsons, I have many but the best are by professional photographers. The one I was intending to upload was taken by U.N. photographer Leo Rosenthal in 1955. Rosenthal died in 1969 and I wouldn't know about any permissions for his photos. The photos I have are in our family collection. So can I upload it? TreacherW (talk) 18:05, 27 February 2025 (UTC)
- @TreacherW: I'm guessing that by "Robert L. Brokenburr's page" you mean en:Robert L. Brokenburr, but if you mean something else (e.g. a site other than the English-language Wikipedia), please clarify.
- I would presume that the image you are describing is still copyrighted and owned by Leo Rosenthal's (unidentified) heirs, in which case you cannot upload it to Commons. The only likely way it wouldn't be copyrighted is if its first publication was in the U.S. (or if it was published in the U.S. within 30 days of its first publication), and that publication was either:
- 1977 or earlier without a copyright notice
- 1978-28 February 1989 without a copyright notice and without subsequent registration within 5 years
- 1963 or earlier, with notice, but the copyright was not renewed.
- If your main purpose is just to illustrate the English-language Wikipedia (en-wiki) article, they are allowed to handle certain non-free files; Commons is not. You can upload directly to en-wiki, without involving Commons. Wikipedia:Non-free content describes their policies for this, and it sounds like this should be OK. You would need to use the template en:Template:Non-free use rationale with the proper values filled out as part of the file page on en-wiki. If that's not clear, feel free to ask more here or at en:WP:Teahouse. - Jmabel ! talk 03:04, 28 February 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for your reply. I'm new to editing in Wikipedia, so I'm not even clear on what Commons is, but all I intended is to add the photo to the English-language article. It is not clear that the photo I want to use is copyrighted, however. Rosenthal apparently was an unofficial photographer at the U.N. though he was clearly recognized by the dignitaries whose pictures he took. The ones he took of my grandfather have the following note stamped on the back: "Photo by Leo Rosenthal 315 West 102nd Street, New York 25, N.Y. -- Tel. UN 4-0893 Private Print--Not for Publication Unless by Special Permission" From my internet research, there seem to be no family surviving Rosenthal. So from what you say, maybe I can use the photo. However, as a new person to editing, I saw that I was assigned a mentor and wrote to them as well, and that person states that because the photo was not published, I cannot use it. Any further advise is appreciated. TreacherW (talk) 14:32, 28 February 2025 (UTC)
- @TreacherW: If the photo was not published (and it looks like passing it to your grandfather was specifically not considered publication), then, yes, it almost certainly remains copyrighted at this time and, sadly, may be an {{Orphan work}}. But in terms of usage on en-wiki, there's some of this where I'd need more information to follow up: "…as a new person to editing" [I'm guessing from the context here this means "editing the English-language Wikipedia"], "I saw that I was assigned" [by whom? although that may not matter] "a mentor" [here it definitely matters who is the mentor if anyone here on Commons is going to follow this up] "and wrote to them… and that person states…" [was this communication on-wiki somewhere we can see (if so, please provide a link), or in an email or something else we can't see? Is the mentor saying specifically that non-free use on en-wiki would not be allowed in this case, and if so what is their rationale (and if not, are they just saying it can't be used on Commons, which seems true)?] - Jmabel ! talk 01:53, 1 March 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, new to editing the English-language Wikipedia, and once I made an account, my welcome message included a note that ChaoticEnby would serve as a mentor. Here's the link to his replay to my initial inquiry, dated Feb 27: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Chaotic_Enby
- I apologize for my ignorance about how to use Wikipedia. TreacherW (talk) 20:01, 3 March 2025 (UTC)
- (better link for anyone who needs to find that en-wiki discussion).
- @TreacherW: "that person states that because the photo was not published, I cannot use it": no, that is not what they said. You might want to reread what they wrote. They said more or less the same I said above, but in less detail. - Jmabel ! talk 05:11, 4 March 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks. So how do you interpret the following fromChaoticEnby: "Note that only published photographs are allowed in that case, so the photograph you mention (marked Not for Publication) can't be used." TreacherW (talk) 19:22, 4 March 2025 (UTC)
- @TreacherW: Sorry, are you saying that photograph was never published, not just that this particular copy was passed on a not-for-publication basis at that time? Yes, that would be a problem. But you do appear to have other published photos you can use. - Jmabel ! talk 05:09, 5 March 2025 (UTC)
- Yeah, it's unclear. Perhaps it would have been published in some U.N. publication, but I simply don't know. I have, however, found a good photo that's published on the Indiana Historical Society's website and I've written to them about using that, so I should be good. Thanks. German book from 1927, unknown author death – PD or not?
[edit]I'm having doubts on whether I can upload a book and which public domain tags I should use. The book was published in 1927 in Germany (making it PD in US, but what about Germany?). The author was born in 1889, but his date of death is unknown (he doesn't appear to have published anything after the 1927 book, this is all I can find about him in online databases and encyclopedias). It may be relevant that Google Books offers the book as PD, but only in US, not in EU.
I assume that I should use {{PD-US-expired}}, but don't know what to do about the "appropriate license tag for the country of origin".
– Phazd (talk) 04:43, 1 March 2025 (UTC)
- Certainly PD in the U.S., but without evidence that the author died in 1954 or earlier, not in Germany. Since he would only have been 65 at that time, that certainly cannot be presumed. - Jmabel ! talk 06:15, 1 March 2025 (UTC)
- Care to identify the author, in case someone feels like sleuthing? DMacks (talk) 10:18, 1 March 2025 (UTC)
- @DMacks So, if I got that right, the book shouldn't be uploaded until meeting the standard for {{PD-old-assumed}}?
- @Jmabel The author is w:de:Karl Lokotsch, and the book I intended to upload is the Etymologisches Wörterbuch der europäischen (germanischen, romanischen und slavischen) Wörter orientalischen Ursprungs. The various online databases I've checked say absolutely nothing about his death.
- However, now I decided to embark on one more search. I checked the German periodical publication that provides info on active academics, Kürschners Deutscher Gelehrten-Kalender, which is used as a source in the German WP article. Its 4th (1931) and 5th (1935) editions provide brief into about Lokotsch, but he's not mentioned in the 7th (1950) edition at all. I wanted to check the 6th (1940/1941) edition too, but apparently De Gruyter has digitised only the first volume. I guess I could check at my university library (they have a copy). But even then, absence from these books does not necessarily indicate death - though dying in Germany between 1935 and 1950 was hardly unlikely...
- Maybe the answer lies stuck somewhere in monographs of/about the institutions he taught at, but those are probably only accessible in German libraries.
- — Phazd (talk) 01:04, 2 March 2025 (UTC)
- I found him in the Adressbuch (city directory) for the city of Baden-Baden from 1950 to 1965, see d:Q24816230 and [1], but not anymore in 1970. So he was still alive and living in Baden-Baden in 1965, but may have died in 1965 or later (or he may have simply moved to another place). Which means his works are still protected in Germany. --Rosenzweig τ 09:09, 2 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Rosenzweig Now that clears it up. Incredible find, thank you! 🙏 — Phazd (talk) 00:06, 3 March 2025 (UTC)

How to Delete Unused Images I Uploaded
[edit]Hello, I have uploaded several images to Wikipedia (or Wikimedia Commons) that are no longer in use, and I would like to delete them. These images are listed under the "Uploads by [my username]" section. Since I was the original uploader, is there a way for me to delete them myself, or do I need to request deletion? If a request is required, what is the proper procedure for requesting the removal of these unused images? Thank you for your help! Best regards Vanpersie1999 (talk) 18:30, 1 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Vanpersie1999: Hi, and welcome. Under 7 days, you may use {{G7}}. Beyond that, please see COM:DP. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 18:54, 1 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Vanpersie1999: The licence under which you uploaded them is irrevocable, so they are unlikely to be deleted without good reason. You have said that the subject (a professional football player) does not wish to be depicted as being at the specific public events (football matches) where they were taken, which is not a good reason. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 14:11, 2 March 2025 (UTC)
- The reason for the deletion request is that Boston Billups did not play in that specific match against FK Subotica, and he does not wish to be depicted as participating in an event where he was not present. The image has already been replaced with another, more accurate photograph. Vanpersie1999 (talk) 12:53, 3 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Vanpersie1999 But then the solution is quite simple: you edit the file description so that it says that it is a photo of the player, when and where it was taken, but that he himself was not involved in the game, but only trained there, or whatever he was doing on the pitch during the game. - I uploaded not a free image, wrong license, please remove Vanpersie1999 (talk) 10:42, 4 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Vanpersie1999: Which image? Who is the photographer? Are you aware that you might be blocked 1. for uploading non free files, 2. for lying about your uploads? Yann (talk) 10:52, 4 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Yann: There are two files. The uploader nominated them for deletion a while ago at the subject’s request, as discussed above. The uploader just nominated them for deletion again, saying that they were copyright violations (with no evidence). I reverted that and warned them at User talk:Vanpersie1999#Multiple deletion requests. I asked them to comment at the existing deletion requests. Brianjd (talk) 02:26, 9 March 2025 (UTC)

What if I have the copyright, but the commercial rights are held by a production company?
[edit]Can I upload a photo to Commons if the photographer (who holds the copyright) is willing to assign it, but the "commercial rights" are held by the production company of the film for which the photos were taken?
Do I also need a rights assignment from the production company? Gabinaluz (talk) 16:45, 2 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Gabinaluz: Are the rights held by the production company exclusive rights? If so, they can't free=license something for which they've already granted an exclusive license. If not, then they are presumably legally free to grant the free license (though I would imagine that if said "production company" expected to make money by sulicensing the photo, they would not be pleased).- Jmabel ! talk 02:29, 3 March 2025 (UTC)
File mass renaming script
[edit]Hi, I have installed User:Perhelion/massrename.js and it is working. How do I search/select multiple images in a category? So far I've only managed to move single files but the script must be able to select multiple files as that was its intended purpose. If I add multiple names in the search box it produces a fail message. There's very little guidance on how to use it. Cheers. Nimbus227 (talk) 12:23, 3 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Nimbus227: Hi. Similar User:Jeff G./massrename.js adds a portlet link named "MassRename" (or "massrename" on Monobook) to "Rename stuff" (files with names that match a particular search string) on cat pages en masse. Users who click it are prompted for a source category name (default is the currently displayed category), what to search for, what to change that to, and a freeform reason which defaults to "[[COM:FR|rename criterion 2]]" AKA "rename criterion 2". There are 6 checkbox options: "Match case", "Treat search string as a regular expression", "Do prompt every file?", "Move & Replace", "Leave a redirect behind:", and "Try to replace usage immediately using your user account:". Use is limited to Admins and Filemovers because those are the only two user groups allowed to rename files here. Named developer Perhelion has been "away on vacation" since November 2019, so documentation from that user may not be forthcoming. Former developer Legoktm may have some more documentation, and edited enwiki late last month. See also my doc at User:Jeff G./massrename. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 14:18, 3 March 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks, your script is very similar, I have a 'mass rename' tab (monobook skin) and am a file mover. The part that I can't work out is how to select multiple files to rename. Nimbus227 (talk) 14:58, 3 March 2025 (UTC)
- Some context might help, in this category I would like to move File:Vasters 1071 (6586460393).jpg and File:Vasters 1072 (6586460629).jpg (both images of the same aircraft type), if I enter search for (and replace) Vasters 1071 and Vasters 1072 using commas between or on separate lines using return I get a failed pop up. I am trying to select multiple files as you would in Windows using Ctrl or Shift and left click. Nimbus227 (talk) 15:08, 3 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Nimbus227: Please see Microsoft on regex and Well House consultants on regex for help on regex. You can also add those two files to another (temp) category for renaming purposes and remove them when done. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 00:06, 4 March 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks, I read the Wikipedia article on regex, I just needed to add a vertical bar between the two file names (1071|1072). The script works best when the same search term is in every file. There seems to be a lot of images in bad file names categories that don't have bad names, expect they have been changed and not removed from the category. All good fun! Cheers. Nimbus227 (talk) 07:30, 4 March 2025 (UTC)
- Easier still is to visit the categories that the affected images have been diffused to and search just for the common keyword that the uploader used. Nimbus227 (talk) 10:24, 4 March 2025 (UTC)

My Swedish Wikipedia page
[edit]I’d like to upload a photo of myself to my Swedish Wikipedia page: sv:Tore S. Börjesson. How Do I Do? ÖstraSödermalm (talk) 23:48, 4 March 2025 (UTC)
- I think you should ask this question on the "Wikipedia in Swedish" and not there.
- "Commons" and "Wikipedia in Swedish" are different projects.
I think this is better as I don't know policy of "Wikipedia in Swedish" about pictures in an userpage. Anatole-berthe (talk) 00:45, 5 March 2025 (UTC) - Hello ÖstraSödermalm. I see you have uploaded File:Tore S. Börjesson.jpg. You can add it to the Swedish Wikipedia article by placing something like "[[File:Tore S. Börjesson.jpg|thumb|A photo of Börjesson]]" at the top of the article's wikicode when you edit it. You may also be able to insert > photo, from the Visual Editor mode. People at sv:Wikipedia:Wikipediafrågor may assist further.
- The photographer will hold the copyright to the photo in most cases. If you visit COM:FAQ and read the "I am not the author, but I have permission" section it has instructions.
- Ask back here if you have any questions :-). Commander Keane (talk) 03:25, 5 March 2025 (UTC)
how do I find projects that transclude a file after I move it?
[edit]When I move a file, the file delinker typically only updates a fraction of transclusions, and the rest don't show up under 'File usage on other wikis' because they now transclude through a rd. [For instance, I just added a date to a map, and it now shows 15 wikis when it had 31.] I remember being able to find them, but I didn't jot it down on my user page and now don't remember how. Kwamikagami (talk) 02:28, 5 March 2025 (UTC)
- ("rd" => "redirect", I presume). - Jmabel ! talk 05:16, 5 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Kwamikagami: when asking a question like this it is really helpful if you would link the file in question so someone can look. My guess is that "what links here" will find the relevant redirects on Commons, and then you can look for global usage info for those redirects. But without a concrete example, I can't confirm this. - Jmabel ! talk 05:18, 5 March 2025 (UTC)
- Maybe, but I don't know how to look for global usage. There is no 'File usage on other wikis' on redirects.
- The file is File:India Naxal affected districts map 2007.svg
- Thanks, Kwamikagami (talk) 05:23, 5 March 2025 (UTC)

- @Jeff G.: That's not fictitious use. It's a bug in the Commons software that always happens when a file is used on WP-sat. It's the prefix ᱢᱩᱬᱩᱛ that is the error; the article is actually at sat:ᱱᱟᱠᱥᱟᱞ. I suppose I should file a bug report; this has been a problem for a decade. Question about File:Flag of the Ba'ath Party.svg
[edit]My question is about "File:Flag of the Ba'ath Party.svg".
I saw in the summary than image is dated "1947-present".
I think we should put there the date of publication of the image.
The date of publication by the user who uploaded the first version. It is indicated to be his own creation based on a flag.
I don't know if I'm right or wrong about the date because my opinion is based on others images of flags there.
For example , "File:Flag of France (1976–2020).svg" is dated "09/27/2005". Anatole-berthe (talk) 04:59, 5 March 2025 (UTC)
- Since this is below TOO almost everywhere, I'm not sure why its date of publication for this particular SVG would even matter. - Jmabel ! talk 05:24, 5 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Jmabel The date of publication for this particular SVG don't matter for copyright.
- The question is only for documentation of the image hosted on Commons. Anatole-berthe (talk) 05:35, 5 March 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, the date field should have the date of the image, usually it is the date of the first version. The comment "1947-present" is more a part of the description and it would be better placed as part of the description field. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:23, 5 March 2025 (UTC)

Upload an mp3 file
[edit]Is a personal conversation recording Rhinne (talk) 13:17, 5 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Rhinne: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/192 by trying to upload an mp3 file with insufficient rights. Too many people try to upload audio files that are still copyrighted by the authors, performers, recorders, publishing companies, etc. without proper licenses from those people. Please document fully the sources and licenses of your audio uploads, and request Autopatrol group membership at COM:RFR when you think you are ready (once you have made more than 500 useful non-botlike edits); having that should allow you to upload mp3 files. In the meantime, please reencode that and other audio into Vorbis or Opus and upload them with full documentation as .ogg files. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 14:32, 5 March 2025 (UTC)

Release of photo of a letter
[edit]What kind of release do I need to include a photo of a letter my subject received and owns, as part of my article? Tmcfarlandpr (talk) 16:05, 5 March 2025 (UTC)

- Jeff: Thanks for the quick response. The author, former Senator Diane Feinstein is deceased. It is a response to a question Preston Cook had in a letter to her about whether or not the Bald Eagle had ever been officially designated as the US National Bird. The Mr. Cook tells me the letter is in the public domain. Tmcfarlandpr (talk) 14:38, 6 March 2025 (UTC)
- Note: receiving a letter does not mean you own the copyright, which would remain with the author of the letter. That is whose permission we would need. In terms of intellectual property rights, receiving a letter isn't much different from owning a copy of a book. - Jmabel ! talk 00:20, 6 March 2025 (UTC)
- Does the letter originate with Dianne Feinstein in her capacity as a United States senator, or with her Senate office? Methinks that would have something to do with determining its copyright status. RadioKAOS / Talk to me, Billy / Transmissions 16:36, 6 March 2025 (UTC)

TIFF files from external sources
[edit]For TIFF files from external sources (like from a museum or library), is it better to upload them as is or as losslessly converted PNGs? One reason of the latter is that a smaller file size is better for Wikimedia's servers, while one for the former is that it preserves file integrity by having a verifiable copy of the file as stored in its external source. prospectprospekt (talk) 16:21, 5 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Prospectprospekt: Hi, and welcome. We prefer compressed TIFF plus JPEG, as opposed to a PNG, because a PNG will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744), and uncompressed TIFF is just a big waste of space. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 18:11, 5 March 2025 (UTC)

- I am not sure if it is in the public domain, so I want to know if it is. I don't know about Bush & Robinson. Editor113u47132 (talk) 02:54, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Editor113u47132: Almost certainly, over 95% of anything online that isn't older than the Web itself is copyrighted and does not offer a free license. The percentage isn't much smaller for anything else that is later than World War II era. As a result, you have to have a specific reason something would' be either in the public domain or free-licensed. If you take a random thing you find online and ask "Hey, is this in the public domain?" the answer will almost always be "No." - Jmabel ! talk 18:08, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
Old company (1979) corporate monthly newsletter
[edit]Old corporate monthly newsletter with an article about a product in development in 1979, company no longer exist JBlucanera (talk) 19:23, 6 March 2025 (UTC)
- Copyights can last longer than companies. If this is from the EU, it possibly may be considered an orphan work, but we could not host it here. If from the US, we could only host it if it had no copyright notice and was not subsequently registered from a copyright. Abzeronow (talk) 22:37, 6 March 2025 (UTC)
- @JBlucanera: You don't say what company; only the biggest would have been likely to register copyright for a newsletter. If you can see the whole newsletter, and there is no copyright notice anywhere, {{PD-US-1978-89}} is very likely, though you should still check https://cocatalog.loc.gov/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?DB=local&PAGE=First to make sure it wasn't registered within five years. - Jmabel ! talk 18:14, 7 March 2025 (UTC)

- @Jmabel "here" meaning in File:Honeywell Page Printing system using dielectric paper.pdf (filtered by Special:AbuseFilter/281) and Special:Diff/1006773428. That didn't work (filtering was noticed) per Special:Diff/1006780242. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 10:18, 8 March 2025 (UTC)
- @JBlucanera: I regret to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/281. Please read Mediawiki:Abusefilter-disallowed-pdf-new-user-upload again. You may upload the image(s) here and make a draft article with transcribed wikitext on Wikipedia, if in scope AND IF you are not still under an NDA AND IF you confirm that International Paper does not consider that information a "trade secret" any more (I don't want you to get sued). — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 10:28, 8 March 2025 (UTC)
- @JBlucanera: To be one step clearer: we no longer let new Commons users upload PDFs, because such a high percentage of the uploads were "bad". Since it seems you know what you are doing, if you aren't autoconfirmed by the time you want to try again, put in a request at Commons:Requests for rights#Confirmed, link this discussion, and it will certainly be granted. - Jmabel ! talk 18:24, 8 March 2025 (UTC)
- @JBlucanera: "here" meaning where? - Jmabel ! talk 00:49, 8 March 2025 (UTC)
- Greetings, I did try to send a copy of the article but apparently it did not go. The article in question was published in March of 1979 when I worked for St. Regis Paper Company (NYC). Since then St. Regis was bought by Champion International, that was later bought by International Paper .
- We developed a new product that was unique and innovative in it's day and the special dielectric paper was used by Honeywell's Page Printing System printer which is defined and written about in Wikipedia. I am in the process of writing an article that would enhance this document telling the story from the paper supplier point of view.
- The newsletter does not show a copyright but it does say it's not to be reproduced or copied.
- Thanks for your reply, I will probably just publish my submittal without using the newsletter article. JBlucanera (talk) 00:42, 8 March 2025 (UTC)

Where am I meant to search for a copyright notice on a newspaper?
[edit]I have a digital copy of an old newspaper from 1967. A lot of images from this paper seem exceedingly useful, and I can’t see an obvious copyright notice on the front or back page, but I don’t want to go willy nilly uploading copyrighted material because the notice isn’t staring right at me. - The other places to check usually are:
- page 2
- editorial page
- wherever the masthead is, which is likely to be front, back, or one of the two I just mentioned, but can occasionally be elsewhere.

Image of map of Mammoth Cave produced in 1908
[edit]Hello! I would like to upload an image of this map, which has been shared publicly by the National Park Service, for usage on the Wikipedia page of Max Kämper who originally created the map.
Would that be acceptable? I'm a member of the organization that redrafted this version of the map (you can see a small copyright notice for Cave Research Foundation in the bottom left) and could request permission for this use if required.
Thanks for any advice!
Best, Iamyourgrandpa (talk) 03:04, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
- {{PD-old-auto-expired|1916}} - Jmabel ! talk 18:19, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
- The PD status of the Max Kämper 1908 original allowed them to make their modified version, but the Cave Research Foundation is unlikely to accept that for their Diana Daunt 1981 modified version, given that they claim a copyright on it. -- Asclepias (talk) 20:09, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Iamyourgrandpa: Hello, To upload to Wikimedia, you need to obtain more than "permission for this use". You need to obtain a free license, which means that the image can be used and modified by anybody for any use. If the copyright holder grants a free license, please see Commons:VRT for the procedure. Anyway, it would seem more relevant for the Max Kämper article to upload a copy of the original map by Max Kämper, which does not need a permission. -- Asclepias (talk) 20:09, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
- Ah, sorry, I didn't pick up on the linked map not being entirely Kämper's work. - Jmabel ! talk 21:37, 7 March 2025 (UTC)

- I'll track down a high quality version of the original 1908 map. How to revert mass filter addition?
[edit]Can we somehow revert mass edits of @Electragod77, at least those marked "added filter" and/or of files uploaded by other contributors? Because what Electragod77 has done to photos is... excruciating to watch. I manually reverted three of those edits ([2] [3] [4]) and se that it's not possible to do this one by one. — 2dk (talk) 18:14, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
- @2dk: Unfortunately, I don't think there is any way to mass-revert overwrites, but someone else may know more; also, it's always tricky to mass revert when there were subsequent edits. Perhaps a bot could do it. In any event, mass reversion (where possible) is always an admin task, so better asked at COM:AN. I see this user has not been active in almost 18 months, so there is no useful way to take it up with them.
- If you are going to ask at COM:AN, try to make a specific proposal, or at least lay out the possibilities. When you say "at least" such-and-such, you are asking someone else to do analysis that you have probably already done. - Jmabel ! talk 18:29, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
Rules on fictious/self-published symbols?
[edit]When I looked at Category:Bundism (and it's associated symbols of bundism cat) it was full of self-made or fictional symbols created seemingly inspired by real symbols, but are themselves without any example of real world use in themselves. all of the files in question have the contributor as the author and have no provided source or instance of real life use to imply that they are digititsations of real flags/symbols
I took to removing all the catagories from them, but realised this might not have been the right course of action as I mostly spend my time on other wikimedia projects, and only interact with Commons secondary to that. Is what I did the correct course of action or was there something else I should have done. Additionally, what are the rules regaring entirely fictious/self-published symbols and their catagorisation. Thank you Bejakyo (talk) 21:05, 8 March 2025 (UTC)
- Convenience link: Category:Bundism, but you say you've removed that so this won't even help anyone find the files you are talking about.
- As a rule, fictitious stuff made up by the uploader has no educational value and is therefore out of scope. (There are a handful of exceptions, like creating a Wikimedia barnstar, but that does not appear to be what we are talking about here.) Even user-made illustrations of real-world things have to pass a high bar. If the files were out of scope, you should have nominated them for deletion. Killing categories just makes it hard to work out what files you are talking about. - Jmabel ! talk 06:06, 9 March 2025 (UTC)

- Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg image as a new user. The image you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller image, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you made the image yourself, please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata. If you did not make the image, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the image photographer / designer license it on their official website or social media, or send the image and permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the image may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid filter 153. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 13:10, 9 March 2025 (UTC)
Article not free
[edit]I want to upload the photo of Georgy Zakharov that is in this link https://warheroes.ru/hero/hero.asp?Hero_id=7866 to the article of the same in Wikipedia in Portuguese, it is a non-free article, but I do not know how to do it. Apollo 13013 (talk) 13:41, 9 March 2025 (UTC)

Interpreting image license wording
[edit]Hello, this image File:Madaras Péter.jpg was tagged as having insufficient information by the bot. The image information says: "The photo was taken at my request, it depicts me, and I have permission to use it." The author is Barabás Zsolt. I don't know how to interpret this, since the photographer was not Madaras Péter. Thanks, Krok6kola (talk) 19:05, 9 March 2025 (UTC)
- Sounds like a useless pseudo-permission. But it looks like the file is less than 30 days old, and supposedly VRT permission is being pursued, so there is no need for anyone to take any action at this time. - Jmabel ! talk 23:44, 9 March 2025 (UTC)

[edit]What can I do ? ManfredK (talk) 22:10, 9 March 2025 (UTC)
Danke! ManfredK (talk) 06:28, 10 March 2025 (UTC)
Why are Data:something.map pages so big?
[edit]I am trying uploading some json map data, but I am running into the 2048kb maximum page size limit. The files I am uploading are 370kb, 589kb, and 1848kb. When copy and pasting the text into the page, however they appear about 4.5 to 6 times larger, and exceed the limit. Why is this? Gamingcanary (talk) 01:03, 10 March 2025 (UTC)
Uploading an image
[edit]Wikipedia has a page for Constatin J. David but without a picture of him.
This is a picture of him standing next to a car at a Hollywood studio where he was producing a film.I believe the film was "Parole Incorporated."
The picture has the overlay of Alamay.com. I checked with them and they do not seem to have it. Can I insert it in the Wikipedia article? Dad1939 (talk) 02:15, 10 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Dad1939 Your link doesn't work for me, is it perhaps a private webmail?
- Per Parole, Inc. That would be an American pic, taken c. 1948.
- If so, the answer to "can I upload this on Commons and so use it on any Wikipedia" is unfortunately it depends, see Help:Public_domain#Published_in_the_United_States. Copyright rules are a pain in the ass.
- However, since David is dead, English Wikipedia has a rule that basically says that you can use a non-free pic of David as leadimage in the article about David, if no "free" pic is to be found. You can make such an upload at WP:FUW, chose "Upload a non-free file". Hope this helps some. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:40, 10 March 2025 (UTC)
- BUT fair use typically requires correct attribution, so if we don't know who took the photo, that avenue may be closed as well. - Jmabel ! talk 17:13, 10 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Dad1939: If we could see attachments in your email, that would be a problem. Can you please provide another way for us to see it that is visible anonymously? In general, though, current films like Parole, Inc. (released November 24, 1948) may still be copyrighted, although the poster File:Parole, Inc. (1948) poster.jpg is here as {{PD-US-not renewed}} (that is, it was researched and found not to have been renewed). — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 18:05, 10 March 2025 (UTC)
Blank SVG file
[edit]File:EggintonArms.svg appears to me (on both Chrome and Firefox) to be a shield outline with its content entirely transparent. Is this something that should be fixed? Or do I have some setting wrong? Maproom (talk) 10:50, 10 March 2025 (UTC)
- Convenience link File:EggintonArms.svg Wouter (talk) 11:04, 10 March 2025 (UTC)
- This is a mistake somewhere in the SVG file. I can take a closer look at it when I get home, but you could also ask about it in the Illustration workshop (COM:GL/ILL). Funnily enough, the shield appears as it should on Internet Explorer, but not any other browsers (including Edge). ReneeWrites (talk) 11:08, 10 March 2025 (UTC)
- Some other files by the same uploader have the same problem, with images or parts of the images not showing. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:42, 10 March 2025 (UTC)
- I see that Vexald fixed at least one such file last month and can probably help to identify the problem. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:24, 10 March 2025 (UTC)
- I've enabled overwriting so any enterprising autoconfirmed editor can fix this. Abzeronow (talk) 19:22, 10 March 2025 (UTC)
- I've fixed it. Many of Lobsterthermador's images use clipping which no longer renders properly. Vexald (talk) 07:24, 11 March 2025 (UTC)
Typo in SR NOR Latch diagram text
[edit]The caption for the bottom section of File:SR NOR Latch How to Work Ver1 Dong-Gyu Jang 20200309.png should read (R,S)=(1,1)→Not Allowed...
instead of (R,S)=(0,1)→Not Allowed...
. I suspect this caption was copied from the previous section. Bradley.sigma (talk) 00:14, 11 March 2025 (UTC)
Can I upload videos from my channel on YouTube?
[edit]I am contributing to the Wikimedia Commons as a volunteer Kushujan (talk) 01:48, 11 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Kushujan: You don't say what channel. If they are within Commons' scope and do not infringe anyone else's copyrights, the answer is almost certainly yes; if not, no. Usually the way to do this is to first indicate the relevant free license on the YouTube page. Then you or anyone else may upload to Commons, citing that as your source. - Jmabel ! talk 02:24, 11 March 2025 (UTC)

Uploading a logo for a new article
[edit]Hello I have created a new article (It is still a temporary article https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Draft:NEON_(organization)/Temp&action=edit) for a non-profit (https://neon.org.gr/en/) and I wish to upload their logo to complete the new entry. I am able to download the logo from their website (from here https://neon.org.gr/wp-content/themes/neon/images/neon-logo-red.png) but since I have not created the logo and I am not part of the organization I am not authorized to upload it. Is there a way to upload it and credit it to the organization? I cannot find an answer for this and I would appreciate the help. Thanks! Np 7 13 (talk) 08:32, 11 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Np 7 13, Hello! Check File:Enhanced Games logo.jpg under "Summary" "Licensing" and upload yours the same way. If you click [edit] at "Licensing" you can copypaste the code for the templates. Hope this helps. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 11:29, 11 March 2025 (UTC)

How do you make a tropical cyclone image?
[edit]How do you make a tropical cyclone image? Can you install the GIMP? I used https://worldview.earthdata.nasa.gov/ I'm using Windows. Thanks. TyphoonAmpil (Talk - Contributions) 09:57, 11 March 2025 (UTC)
- Hi TyphoonAmpil.
- What exactly are you trying to do?
- I think you can click the camera icon in worldview (they call it "Take a snapshot"), download the jpg and upload that to Commons. If you want to crop or edit that jpg before uploading to Commons you could install the GIMP and make changes before uploading to Commons.
- File:Kirrily 2024-01-25 0330Z.jpg was made this way I guess. If you want to make a cyclone path/track image like File:Kirrily 2024 path.png you can follow the instructions in the Source part on that file's description page.
- The folks at w:Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Tropical cyclones may be able to help also. Commander Keane (talk) 08:39, 12 March 2025 (UTC)

Hello. My nativelanguage is Japanese, but the initial English username I set was what I intended, but there is a mistake username in chinese character displayed in Japanese (name displayed in chinese character), and I would like to correct it. Please tell me how to correct or change it. Koichi.ikeda (talk) 18:04, 11 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Koichi.ikeda: See meta:Changing username for how to change your WMF user name, used on all WMF sites. Given that your account name is all Latin characters, I can't really understand what the problem is and what you are trying to do. If this is something about the Japanese-language Wikipedia, please ask there. - Jmabel ! talk 02:37, 12 March 2025 (UTC)
